Technology has been advancing at a rapid pace, shaping the way we work, connect, and live. This can be both exciting and overwhelming for people of every generation.

Each generation has had to adapt to its own wave of innovation: Generation X witnessed the rise of the Internet and its ability to connect people worldwide; Millennials embraced personal computers, mobile phones, and the beginning of social media; Generation Z grew up with instant access to information and entertainment through iPods, iPads, and smartphones; and now, Gen Alpha is growing up alongside the advancement of artificial intelligence. While younger people often joke about “Boomers” struggling to keep with FaceTime or misusing text abbreviations, many older adults are finding meaningful ways to adopt new technologies to improve their lives.

According to the US Census Bureau, the population of citizens ages 65 and older makes up 16.8% of the US population. However, the Administration for Community Living noted that 28% of these individuals live alone. For many seniors, this may mean that they experience periods of loneliness and social isolation, especially when family members are preoccupied with busy lives of their own. To combat this, certain AI-powered chatbots are being marketed specifically for seniors who may need a companion to talk to and remind them to take their medication.

ElliQ: an AI-powered chatbot

One prime example of this is a chatbot called ElliQ, “A friendly robot that makes everyday easier and more enjoyable”. CBS News tells us about Jill Smola: a 75-year old widow living alone with a lung condition. As someone who used to work as an aide for the elderly, she understands the importance of social interaction. However, since she can no longer drive, it is not easy for her to have such connections often. That is when she decided to substitute those experiences by talking to ElliQ. Smola understands that talking to her little robot companion is not the same as speaking with people, but still, “the connection is truly meaningful”.

According to their user testimonials, ElliQ makes life easier and more enjoyable for older adults living alone. Instead of struggling with FaceTime or sending a text message, all they have to do is ask ElliQ. The chatbot also keeps track of their medical conditions, asks about their medication/health, and makes sure that their users are actively taking care of themselves. Beyond the chatting features, ElliQ is equipped with activities for enrichment, like trivia questions, video exercises, and other interactive games. But, just the fact that they have someone to say “I’m home!” to helps them feel a sense of belonging.

Some professionals may have concerns about individuals becoming over-reliant on chatbots — using them to fully substitute human interaction. However, when done ethically and thoughtfully, these chatbots may be what helps the older generation stay connected with the world: making it easier to call family, check the news, and stay healthy.

When researching what prevents aging adults from having higher risks of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, a study found that “we can prevent cognitive decline and delay the onset of AD if we keep mentally active and frequently participate in social activities”. Another study found that among 10,318 participants, all ages 65 and older, **“**a higher frequency of engagement in adult literacy and active mental activities was associated with a 9.0% to 11.0% reduction in dementia risk,” demonstrating how important it is for aging adults to engage in enriching activities that these robot companions could provide.

The important thing to remember as technology keeps advancing is to use these tools not as a substitute for real relationships, but as an additional layer of support that helps people stay healthier, happier, and less isolated. 🌱
