An exhibition or trade show at DOKKX featuring mock-up displays of different rooms. A large crowd of attendees is gathered around colorful partitioned displays that showcase different living spaces, including a bathroom area labeled "BAD" with white fixtures. The space has wood-paneled walls with the DOKKX logo displayed prominently. Various display areas feature different themes, including one labeled "ERGONOMI." Several mannequins are positioned throughout the space, and information boards with small images are visible on a green partition. Attendees appear to be listening to a presentation or guided tour.

The DokkX showroom

A quick “technology news” Google search brings up articles surrounding advancements in Apple products, gaming consoles, and of course — AI. But what advancements are being made for the home? How can technology make our everyday lives easier?

DokkX in Aarhus, Denmark explores this question in their latest exhibit: “Welcome Welfare Technology”.

A modern bedroom exhibit at the DOKKX show featuring a cozy setup with peach-colored walls. The space includes a blue loveseat with decorative pillows, a height-adjustable desk with a keyboard and various items, and an ergonomic office chair. Additional elements include string lights, woven pendant lamps, a wall-mounted slatted shelf system displaying books and decorative items, and a chess set on a side table. A plush dog toy sits on the floor near a potted plant, and minimalist artwork adorns the walls. The exhibit demonstrates an accessible and multifunctional bedroom design.

Closeup of the “Bedroom” exhibit

The current exhibition … is an exhibition of a modern home filled with everyday technologies and innovative solutions. The exhibition is set in a homely environment where you can explore and try out the latest and most innovative solutions for the home and daily living.

In this article, we’ll be breaking down three of our favorite innovations from the exhibit.

Bedroom: Somnox

A person with light skin and brown hair lies peacefully in bed with white sheets, wearing a white sleeveless top. They are holding the Somnox robot against their body. The person appears to be sleeping or resting comfortably in warm, natural lighting.

Somnox is a robot designed to help users get better sleep. The user simply matches Somnox’s rhythmic breathing to fall soundly asleep.

Office: Tipy Keyboard

An ergonomic, curved keyboard (Tipy keyboard) with a split design and dark gray keys featuring multiple character layouts including both standard and special characters. A person's right hand is positioned on the right side of the keyboard, with fingers resting naturally on the keys.

The Tipy Keyboard is a keyboard designed for one-handed use. The keyboard has normal mouse function, shortcuts, and keys, and the layout of the keys is designed for easier/faster typing.

Kitchen: Uccello Kettle

A person's hand tilts an Uccello kettle using its ergonomic handle. The black and white kettle features a specialized tilting design on a stable base, allowing it to pour white liquid into a white teacup positioned on a saucer beneath it. The kettle displays the Uccello logo on its side and incorporates accessibility features for ease of use without requiring the user to lift the entire appliance.

The Uccello Kettle is an electric kettle that allows someone with limited arms/hands/wrist functionality to safely pour water. Instead of lifting and angling the kettle, the Uccello Kettle is already positioned at an angle. Then, the user simply tilts the handle upwards to release liquid.

While you’re brainstorming project ideas for XHacks, “Welcome Welfare Technology” is a reminder that there are limitless bounds to how technology can shape and improve our lives. As HCI practitioners, always ensure what you create properly bridges the gap between technology and human life.
